Radiation Study Reports

Introduction
Welcome to the Jupiter Europa Orbiter radiation study report page. Radiation risk is the single largest technical challenge for a mission to Europa. To learn more about the radiation risks please read the Radiation Fact Sheet for the Jupiter Europa Orbiter (JEO) Mission (PDF, 144 KB) CL#08-4020.

The purpose of these reports is to provide early dissemination of electronic design guidelines and documentation so that engineering and payload providers can adequately design for the harsh radiation environment for an upcoming opportunity of an international Outer Planet Flagship Mission. NASA and ESA are both planning opportunity announcements for scientific instruments to fly on the mission. A decision was made jointly by NASA/ESA in February 2009 that a Europa-Jupiter System Mission is prioritized to take the first launch opportunity available in 2020.

The reports below are products of the radiation study conducted at JPL in 2008. Note that these reports are forthcoming - pending JPL documentation clearance. Please check back.

1. JPL-APL Radiation Capabilities (rev 11-13-09) (PDF, 1.08 MB) CL#09-2292
A one page 2-sided brochure which summarizes JPL and APL's capabilities in meeting radiation challenges.

2. EJSM Risk Mitigation Plan: Radiation an Planetary Protection (PDF, 1.01 MB) CL#09 – 0663
The objective of this plan is to mitigate the development and operational risk posed to the spacecraft and instruments of the Jupiter Europa Orbiter (JEO) (the US portion of the EJSM). In addition, the plan will facilitate trades among mission
lifetime, mass and power requirements, while meeting science objectives and
reducing lifecycle cost. This four-year plan is based on the approach and strategy outlined in the 2007 Europa Explorer (EE) Mission Study Report. (D-47928)

3. Return to Europa: Overview of the Jupiter Europa Orbiter Mission (PDF, 6.88 MB) CL#09 –0123
This paper was presented at the IEEE Aerospace Conference, Big Sky, Montana, March 2009. It addresses the mission concept developed by a joint JPL and APL team to address the science objectives as defined by an international Science Definition Team formed in 2008 while designing for the Jupiter environment and meeting NASA guidelines.

4. Radiation Challenges and Risk Mitigation for the JEO Mission (PDF, 180 KB) CL#09 –1477
This paper was presented at the Nuclear and Emerging Technologies for Space (NETS-2009), Atlanta, June 2009. It focuses on the radiation challenges and risk mitigation for the proposed NASA-led JEO mission and describes a system-level radiation-hardened-by-design approach to mitigate pervasive mission and system
level impacts.

5. Jupiter Europa Orbiter Radiation Environment (PDF, 1.67 MB) CL#08 –1707
This paper discusses the characteristics of radiation environments of the Europa Orbiter.

6. JEO Designing Circuits and Systems for Single Event Effects (PDF, 1.01 MB) CL#09-2713
This document discusses the effects of single energetic particles in space on microelectronic and optoelectronic devices. Examples are provided of the complex responses of advanced microelectronics, including functional interrupts that disrupt the basic way in which devices respond to electrical signals. Various circuit and system design approaches are included.

7. OPFM Test Method for Enhanced Low Dose Rate Damage (ELDRS) Effects in integrated Circuits for Outer Planetary Missions (PDF, 135 KB) CL#09-2312
This document describes a new approach for dealing with enhanced damage at low dose rate. It is applicable to missions to the outer planets that have radiation requirements that are so high that it is impractical to do the tests at the very low rates used for more conventional missions.

8. Assessment of Radiation Effects on Science and Engineering Detectors for the JEO Mission Study (PDF, 4.19 MB) CL#09 – 2128
The purpose of this document is to summarize the findings of the JEO Detector Working Group. The JEO Detector Working Group (DWG) was formed and chartered to assess whether a feasible pathway exists for detectors and key components unique to the planning payload described in the 2008 JEO Study Report. (JPL D-48256)

9. Avoiding Problems caused by S/C on-orbit Internal Charging Effects (PDF, 326 KB) NASA-HDBK-4002
This document was developed to address the growing concerns associated with the in-flight buildup of charge on internal spacecraft components due to space plasmas with high energy electrons. It details some methods and techniques to mitigate internal charging.

10. JEO Radiation Design Guidelines (PDF, 600 KB) CL#08-4729
This document provides guidelines and recommendations to support the design of space avionics in a high radiation JEO environment. It is targeted at the major locations of spacecraft flight electronics: in the engineering subsystems C&DH, Power, and Telecom, as well as in the science payload. All phases of avionics development are addressed, including architecture, fault tolerant systems engineering, parts selection, design & reliability analyses, simulation and support equipment, and test. (JPL D-48258)

11. JEO Total Dose and Displacement Damage Design Guideline
This document provides the background required to interpret the effects of total dose and displacement damage on electronic and optoelectronic parts on the proposed mission to Europa. The guideline describes the conventional approach using worst-case parameters that incorporate the effects of temperature, aging, and radiation damage, along with a new statistical approach that is less conservative.

12. ASIC via FPGA Guideline with Addendum on Europa (PDF, 145 KB) CL#09 – 2124
This document discusses the Jupiter Europa Orbiter Mission ASIC via FPGA Guidelines with an Addendum on Europa ASIC Process Flow. (D-48347)

13. OPFM Long Life Design Guidelines (PDF, 529 KB) CL#08-4730
This document provides guidelines that will enhance the lifetime of flight electronics in a JEO mission in the engineering subsystems such as C&DH, Power, and Telecom, as also in the science payload. Measures to extend lifetime vs. radiation and other life-limiting effects are considered. All phases of mission design are addressed, from requirements capture through operations. (JPL D-48271)

14. Memory Investigation for JEO Mission (PDF, 950 KB) CL#08-4219
This document summarizes the devices and technologies considered for use in the spacecraft data recorder, testing and evaluation performed to date, and makes a recommendation for further study.

15. OPFM Parts Program Requirements (PDF, 438 KB) CL#09-2367
This document establishes the baseline Electrical, Electronic and Electromechanical (EEE) Parts Program Requirements (PPR) for the future Outer Planet Flagship Missions, encompassing both the Europa and Titan orbiters.

16. Approved Parts and Materials List (APML) FY08 (XLS, 423 KB) CL#09-2362
This document is a partial listing of the Approved Parts and Materials List (APML) for OPFM. Every approved part listed on the APML meets the applicable reliability, quality, and radiation requirements of OPFM Parts Program Requirements (PPR). Due to the higher levels of total dose radiation expected for EJSM, the APML will specify the acceptability of parts at four radiation levels, three pertaining to EJSM (100,300, and 1000 krads) and one pertaining for TSSM (50 krads).

17.Approved Parts and Materials List (APML) FY09 (XLS, 674 KB)CL#09-4579
This document is a partial listing of the Approved Parts and Materials List (APML) for OPFM. Every approved part listed on the APML meets the applicable reliability, quality, and radiation requirements of OPFM Parts Program Requirements (PPR). Due to the higher levels of total dose radiation expected for EJSM, the APML will specify the acceptability of parts at four radiation levels, three pertaining to EJSM (100,300, and 1000 krads) and one pertaining for TSSM (50 krads).
