Europa Jupiter System Mission - 4th Instrument Workshop - July 26-29, 2010

NASA and ESA are organizing the 4th Europa Jupiter System Mission (EJSM) Instrument Workshop on July 26-29, 2010 in the Pasadena, California area.

This workshop will be covering programmatic and technical aspects related to the EJSM mission, more specifically to both spacecraft (JGO and JEO). Among the topics to be addressed are: Jovian radiation models, the JEO system reliability model, radiation shielding modeling results, and the planned JEO and JGO architectures. Two classes will be offered as part of the workshop: a tutorial on the Jovian environments, and Planetary Protection considerations for instrument development. This workshop will also provide relevant programmatic information on the instrument Announcement of Opportunity (AO), which is expected to be released in early 2011. In particular, new information will be provided on the selection and review process, AO policies, and other topics. Attendees will have the opportunity to provide feedback to NASA that will be considered when finalizing the AO. Potential instrument providers who intend to respond to the EJSM instrument AO are strongly encouraged to attend this workshop.

Note that interested parties may wish to review the instrument resources section on the OPFM website.

Registration

There is no registration fee for this workshop. However, completion of the online registration form is mandatory to ensure adequate facility and refreshment planning. Please, click the link on the left to register.

Past Instrument Workshops

The second instrument workshop was held in July 2009. It addressed items such as EJSM status, plans for instrument selection, model payloads, and technical challenges facing instrument providers (in particular the radiation environment) for both JEO and JGO. Some of the technical discussions were specific to JEO but were applicable to the JGO flight element as well. In addition, programmatic topics such as schedules and the AOs were discussed.

The first Instrument workshop was held in June 2008. The focus of the first workshop was to introduce the community to the mission concepts for both EJSM and the Titan Saturn System Mission and to expose potential instrument providers to the harsh environments which challenge the designers.

This workshop is not a repeat of the previous workshops and will convey new critical information.

Instrument Resources
We recommend that all potential instrument providers review the instrument resources section of the OPFM website, which is a repository of helpful information, including presentations given during the 2008 & 2009 workshops. These presentations cover important information which will not be specifically addressed again at this workshop.
